Decide whether disconnection is appropriate
Read the service procedure. Some diagnostic tests need power maintained, while airbag, starter, alternator, welding, or major electrical work may require isolation. Save codes, radio or clock settings, seat memory, and learned information when useful.

Make the area safe

Restore vehicle functions
Follow the owner information for windows, clock, steering, idle, transmission, battery monitoring, keys, or other relearns. Recheck charging, warning lamps, and stored codes.
