Confirm the damper is the problem
Look for leakage, damaged shafts, poor rebound control, uneven tire wear, noise at mounts, and side-to-side behavior. Inspect strut mounts, ball joints, control arms, sway-bar links, springs, isolators, and rear shock mounts.
A light oil film may differ from active leakage; follow the manufacturer’s inspection criteria.
Choose a matched replacement
Verify year, engine, body style, trim, front or rear, stock or lowered spring, shaft and mount design, and intended use. Replace pairs on an axle unless instructions or diagnosis justify otherwise.
Plan mounts, bearings, dust boots, bump stops, isolators, and one-time hardware.
Handle the front assembly safely
Use approved lifting points and a correct spring compressor. Mark orientation before removal and keep clear of the spring path. Do not loosen the center shaft nut until the spring is safely controlled.

Install without preload mistakes
Seat springs and isolators exactly, orient mounts, route hoses and wiring, and start fasteners by hand. Tighten suspension pivots at the specified position.
Do not grip a polished damper shaft with pliers.
Finish with alignment and checks
Verify wheel torque, steering lock-to-lock clearance, ride height, and no leaks or contact. Obtain alignment after disturbing strut-to-knuckle or geometry-related fasteners.
